How To Find Your Perfect Eye Liner

I often get asked about eye liner, and it’s probably because I’m rarely seen without mine. It can be really tricky to find the right one for you, and that’s down to two reasons:

  1. It needs to be the right colour for you

  2. It needs to be the right look for you

After about 17 years, I have managed to find three that are the most reliable (in my opinion, anyway) to achieve different looks for what you prefer. I’ve been a lover of Charlotte Tilbury for a long time, so it’s no surprise these are all her creations - and if you fancy buying any of them, don’t forget to use my discount code which you’ll find at the end of this blog.

Before we get into my top three recommendations, let’s first talk about why the right colour eyeliner (and mascara/eye make up in general) is important. As an Image Consultant who focuses on Colour Analysis, I can’t stress enough how the right colours make you look healthy and authentic. Here are two common misconceptions about eye make up, that can get in the way of you looking and feeling your best:

Myth Number 1: Black suits everyone

Unfortunately that’s not true - and it’s worth me doing a whole other blog on this to explain why this is the case, and where I can provide the best alternatives for you.

If people are wearing a colour, such as black, that’s not right for them and it’s on their face next to the focal point of their face (the eyes), it’ll make that person look a little out of place if the colour is ‘off’. If your skin cells are blue based, you need blue based colours. For Winters this is black or charcoal, and for Summers it’s navy or brown - although saying that, Summers and Winters can also enjoy other blue based alternatives like plums or emeralds - as long as the colours work in harmony with their face. If you have yellow based skin cells, you’ll need yellow based make up which will accentuate the warmth in your face, both Autumns and Springs can do yellow based browns, golds, and navy colours.

Myth Number 2: The right eye make up is dependant on your eye colour

This isn’t 100% correct. Although eye colour can be really benefited with the right eye make up, again - it’s important that the colour also goes with you and if you need blue or yellow-based colours. So it’s important you don’t solely rely on the colour of your eyes when finding the right make up; for example, I have green eyes - on colour charts on make up counters, it might say that green eyes can look amazing with gold eye make up, but because my skin cells are blue based and I need blue based colours, gold makes me look sallow and ill. So it’s important that you know what colours work for you as a whole, before buying your make up - so you feel your best and spend money knowing it’s an excellent purchase for you.

Below are my top three eye liners that are tried and tested, and for all seasons. Each eye liner achieves a different outcome, and I’ll walk you through each of them.

The Feline Flick eyeliner is my every day go-to eye liner. It creates a sharp and clean aesthetic that is strong and cat-eye. Available in two colours, it’s perfect for all the seasons. I highly recommend this as it’s more like using a pen. The grip is good, the pigment is excellent and because it feels like a pen it’s easy to control.

I love to use the Colour Chameleon for a relaxed blurred out look. It’s chunky and applies in a smooth and almost creamy texture. For a more accurate approach, I use the brush in the image and it allows you to direct the colour to where you want it to go. You can apply it directly to the lash line and draw on for a chunkier look, or blend it out which soften the overall look and feel. Available in multiple colours, I’ve just selected four, showing you what you could do depending on your season.

Similar to the previous eyeliner, the Kholl has a really lovely application that can be used directly from the pencil to the eye, or you can blend it out for a softened look with a brush. Here I’ve picked three colours for the four seaons - the plum colour is stunning and Winters can also do this if they feel black is too deep for them.
